Yes. Although there is no fee for being in band and no cost to participate in class, there are some cost associated with being in band.
What can you tell me about instruments? Do I have to buy one?
We are able to work out arrangements with local music companies and they are able to offer discounts on the purchase of an instrument or can set you up on a monthly payment plan over the course of time. In fact, they even offer an instrument rental program. This program is perfect for beginner students who may be “experimenting” with their commitment to something new. The rental program protects you from investing money in an instrument while not being 100% certain that your child will continue in his or her band instruction. After your child’s first year, it is suggested that you trade in the rental instrument for a higher quality instrument for purchase on a monthly payment plan. Also, a select number of school-owned instruments are available for students with great financial need as well as instruments that are too expensive to rent. There is a $50 annual maintenance fee to use school owned instruments. NO STUDENT WILL BE TURNED AWAY FROM BAND DUE TO FINANCIAL SITUATIONS! We believe in helping every child succeed in his or her musical endeavors.
Do band students go on field trips?
Students will have several opportunities to take trips with the band throughout the year. Most of these trips are optional trips and are not required for all students to attend. Students who wish to attend such trips will be required to cover the cost of the trip. These trips include events such as the Houston Opera, Houston Symphony Orchestra, and The Blue Man Group. Other trips will be required for students, especially for the Symphonic and Honor Bands. These trips are mainly UIL Contests or other performances. Most of the time the school is able to cover the cost of such trips.
Other Costs -
Concert and Symphonic Band students will be required to purchase concert uniforms (tuxedo shirt) as well as black dress pants, shoes, and socks. All band students will be required to have appropriate clothes for concert.
How do I join band?
In January, the Counselors will be visiting your school to help your child sign up for classes at C.E. King Middle School. If you have decided to join band, make sure you put a “1” next to band indicating it is your first elective choice. This will guarantee placement into the KMS Band Program. Remember, all you have to do is put “1” next to band on your class selection sheet, and you’re in! If you have already filled this form out and would still like to add band to your schedule, you will need to contact the school's counselors.
Do I need to purchase an instrument?
No. In fact we encourage students to rent/rent-to-own their instruments from one of our local music company. This will allow you to return the instrument in the event that band does not work out for your child. This will also allow you to easily upgrade your instrument if your child progresses through the Sheldon ISD Band Program. The school also owns several of the more expensive instruments that can be rented from us. Again, we believe in helping every child succeed in his or her musical endeavors. NO STUDENT WILL BE TURNED AWAY FROM BAND DUE TO FINANCIAL SITUATIONS!
How much time will it take?
As a beginning band student, there are five to seven (required for a grade) rehearsals/concerts outside regular school hours throughout the year. One concert is in December and the other is in May. There will also be a full beginner band rehearsal before each concert. Beyond that, students will participate in solo and small group contests. Students will also be required to engage in regular home practice routines like having homework from a “regular” class; however, our home practice requirements of only 15 minutes per day for 7 days leaves plenty of time for participation in other activities and schoolwork.
Can I still participate in athletics?
YES! In fact we encourage students to participate in other activities. We work very closely with the other coaches/sponsors so our students can be as involved with school activities as they wish!
How do I choose an Instrument to play?
In the later part of the spring semester (April/May), C.E. King Middle School will host an Instrument Placement Night. This event will allow students to visit the KMS Band Hall, try out different instruments, ask questions, and choose which instrument they will play in beginner band. Music Companies will be on sight to help parents/guardians provide all the necessary supplies needed for your new band student. Check the website calendar for specific date/time information or feel free to contact us by phone.
What if I don't know anything about music?
Not at all! We will teach you everything you need to know to be successful in band!
